New Photos, New Classic Readers, New Photos

January 1st, 2014 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image Happy New Year! We are delighted to have come through December successfully - and a big thank you to all those who have had to put up with delayed responses to emails, delayed delivery of parcels, delayed shipment of orders etc. while we got ourselves straight in our new premises and battled various technological challenges. There are a few 'News' to celebrate so let's just take the big two: 1. The ESV New Classic Readers Edition is now available in Black, Brown and Tan (caramel might be a better description - pictures available soon), and all our back orders have been sent out

The ESV Study Bible is back in stock

December 6th, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image Having sold all the copies we brought in initially before the move down from Glasgow to London, we have now received further stocks of the Allan ESV Study Bible - beautiful Highland Goatskin Bibles in the Personal size, in black or brown - at our new London premises. Dominique and I were lucky enough to see these in production at our London bindery when we visited back in October to take a look around. As you can see, they are beautiful looking Bibles. We hope you like them as much as we do! [gallery

Getting going

December 3rd, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image It has been a busy, and - though I am not sure this is quite the right word - messy-feeling couple of days at the new premises of R.L. Allan. Our email account appears to have been hijacked somehow by spammers, and even the bounce backs from people whose email addresses have changed amount to 6000+ emails; the website was down for a while overnight/this morning (apologies to our US customers whose efforts to order were therefore frustrated); but we have processed at least some orders, and even sent out some Bibles... So, if you are waiting for an order, fear

The Bibles have arrived…

November 29th, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image After a fair bit of toing and froing with Pickfords they did manage to get both lorries of Bibles - and other paraphernalia - safely to our new premises (even if the larger lorry did have to wait for 3 hours to get back out of our little road because of a car parked in a rather unhelpful place on the corner!)[gallery link="file"] Here are some pictures of the boxes, our little 'ribbon-cutting' ceremony with the children around, just before Nicholas and Stephen left to head back to Glasgow, having helped us get everything ready the past couple of days -

The first photos are in…

November 29th, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image After a few adventures along the way the lorry arrived at the back of M&S just before 10am this morning, and we had lots of fun running around knocking on doors to find various car owners down our little cul-de-sac so we could get our removal van down to our entrance! Anyway - we have now worked out how to add photos, so here are a couple of the newly refurbished premises, all ready for everything to arrive. We'll share a couple more of the moving mayhem shortly. We have moved!

November 29th, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image R. L. Allan has now moved from its old home in Glasgow to our new premises in southwest London. We will be unloading the Bibles after their long journey down from the north over the next couple of days and are hoping to resume trading on Monday 2nd December – please bear with us as we get everything set up and running, no doubt with a few hiccups along the way... We have some photographs of our new home and the new team to show you, including Ferdie, the office dog - but we're having a little trouble loading them at

Feeding the Multitude

February 27th, 2013 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image Why are there so many versions of the Bible?  Good question!  Time was when the King James Bible was The Bible, no doubt about it. Actually, there has never been a time when there was just the one version. The KJV Bible had to compete with the Geneva Bible and the Bishops Bible and the Douay Rheims Bible 400 years ago. A multiplicity of translations is as old as the hills. Talking about hills, the feeding of the five thousand on the hillside is told in three different Gospels;  Matthew, Mark and Luke. Wouldn't it be simpler if we just had the

Chinese Whispers

October 26th, 2012 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image You may have noticed that many (particularly US) Christian publishers print their Bibles in China. This seems to disturb some readers who feel that China may be an enemy of the West. I wonder how God may view this?   The co-operation between the Bible Society's Amity Foundation in China  - who print 10 million high quality Bibles every year for their home market of 90 million Christians  - and  the main Christian publishers round the world has been a feature of Bible production for a decade now. Chinese print and paper is of consistently high quality; that is why the main  Christian publishers use

Who was Mrs McCrindle?

August 23rd, 2012 | By Ian and Dominique Metcalfe | Category: Bibles Direct Latest
Default Image I love that word serendipity. Something like happy happenstance. When good things happen unexpectedly in a beautiful way. One of our Allan customers recently bought an old book at a local auction entitled 'On the Voyage' , published by R L Allan in 1883 . The fly leaf is signed by the great man himself and it was clearly a gift to his friend, Mrs McCrindle. Who was she and why did Robert Allan give her a copy of this book? I'm delighted that our kind customer's lucky find at auction will be a blessing to us. She is sending me this precious volume to
